At 7 Day Plumbing Services, we recently carried out a full annual service on an Ideal Vogue 40kW combination boiler at a property in Wilmslow.

The boiler was operating well when we arrived and successfully passed all required safety, combustion and performance checks. Alongside completing the routine service, we also identified a simple adjustment that could help the customer reduce unnecessary energy use without affecting their comfort.

The Customer’s Requirements

The customer booked an annual service to make sure their Ideal Vogue boiler continued to operate safely, reliably and efficiently.

There were no reported faults with the boiler, and the customer was not experiencing any issues with their heating or hot water. The purpose of the appointment was to complete the recommended annual checks and identify any maintenance or adjustments that could improve the system’s ongoing performance.

Work Carried Out

We completed a full boiler service in line with the manufacturer’s recommended procedure.

The work included:

Reviewing the Hot Water Temperature

As part of the visit, we discussed how the customer used their domestic hot water.

The boiler’s hot water outlet temperature had been set to 60°C. However, the customer explained that the water was hotter than they needed and that they regularly mixed cold water with it before use to reach a comfortable temperature.

This meant the boiler was heating the water to a higher temperature than was necessary for the customer’s everyday requirements.

A Simple Efficiency Adjustment

With the customer’s agreement, we reduced the domestic hot water temperature setting from 60°C to 48°C.

The aim of the adjustment was to provide hot water at a more suitable temperature directly from the tap, reducing the need to heat the water excessively and then cool it down again by mixing in cold water.

For this customer, the new setting provided:

  • Comfortable hot water at the tap

  • Less need to mix in cold water

  • Reduced unnecessary heating

  • The potential to lower gas consumption over time

  • A hot water temperature better suited to their everyday needs

The adjustment did not require any changes to the boiler itself and was completed using the existing controls.

Why Small Adjustments Can Matter

Improving boiler efficiency does not always require major repairs or expensive upgrades.

In some cases, the boiler may be operating correctly but its settings may not be properly matched to the way the household uses its heating and hot water. Reviewing these settings during an annual service can highlight straightforward opportunities to reduce wasted energy.

Once the service and temperature adjustment had been completed, the boiler was recommissioned and fully tested.

  • Ready to continue delivering reliable heating and hot water
